The purpose of The Cowtown Marathon is to promote physical fitness in the community. As one of Texas's premier running events, The Cowtown features a Marathon, Ultra Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and children's races. This is an annual race that was founded in 1979 by a group of running doctors from The University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX. It is always held the last weekend in February and in 2011 there were over 22,000 runners from over 10 countries and 48 states.
The proceeds from the events in February go toward the C.A.L.F (Children's Activities for Life and Fitness) program. This program provides grants for local elementary schools to provide children with running shoes and other resources that promote an active lifestyle. The C.A.L.F. race is held the last Saturday in September and is a 5K/1mile run/walk for children and family. This year it will be September 24, 2011 in Fort Worth.
