Pippa Small MBE - Ethical Jewelry Designer, Anthropologist, Human Rights Activist, Survival Ambassador. London, Los Angeles, New York.
Pippa was made an Ambassador of the Human Rights organization Survival International in 2008 and awarded an MBE by the queen in 2013 for ethical jewellery and charity work and won Ethical jeweller of the year and the prestigious Walpole cooperate social responsibility award in 2016. Pippa opened her first shop in 2007 in Notting Hill in London, followed by a shop in Brentwood Los Angeles in 2008, and in 2016 she opened her first concession in New York at ABC Carpet & Home.
Pippa has ventured further in exploring ways of making jewellery, reviving traditional skills and techniques in communities in Central and South America and Southern Africa. Pippa has worked with the world’s first registered Fairtrade gold mine in Bolivia and with the esteemed Fairtrade company MADE based in Kibera, a slum area in Nairobi. Pippa also works with the prestigious charity Turquoise Mountain in Afghanistan where they are approaching their tenth year of collaboration and now in Burma, helping train and employ artisans and promote traditional skills, and is hoping this year to launch a project with Turquoise mountain working with Syrian refugees.
Pippa believes the art of jewellery making can enhance life and help alleviate poverty and protect precious traditions, helping to grow the confidence of crafts people around the world and reverse the tradition of exploitation associated with the gem industry over the centuries. Her jewellery is collected and coveted by many who appreciate the rough organic, handmade feel of the jewellery. Using precious and semi-precious stones, playing with colour and allowing the natural feel of the stones to harmonize with high carat warm yellow gold. Pippa's pieces are full of stories and inspired by ancient, tribal jewellery and the harmonious shapes found in nature.
